Inspiring Escapism:
The Interiors of Frances Adler Elkins
Saturday, November 4
10:30 am
Historian Scott Powell will discuss the career of California-based interior designer Frances Adler Elkins (1887-1953), who worked primarily in California, Illinois, and New York. Powell's presentation will feature examples of her work around the country, but will place particular emphasis on three buildings Elkins decorated at the 1939 and 1940 Golden Gate Exposition: the Yerba Buena Clubhouse, the San Francisco Building, and Hostess House.
Other regional work by Elkins included San Francisco mansions and apartments, cliffside Belvedere houses, large Peninsula estates, and Mid-Century Modern ranch houses. Her local public commissions included San Francisco hotels such as the Fairmont, Clift, Mark Hopkins, and St. Francis, as well as iconic local restaurants and cocktail lounges.
Scott Powell has been researching Frances Elkins since 2002, working closely with members of her family and her clients. His book, Frances Elkins: Visionary Designer, was published earlier this year.

I’m delighted to collaborate with book author, Christie Nelson- we will share a booth to display copies of Christie’s novel “Beautiful Illusion” and an intimate selection of some of my original paintings and prints inspired by Ralph Stackpole’s statue of Pacifica- the iconic goddess of the 1939 fair to accompany this event.
